What is Joy?

December 14th is Gaudete Sunday in the church – Gaudete means “rejoice!” Joy is an important Christian concept and spiritual discipline, and yet it can feel so distant at times. Brené Brown says “Joy is the most vulnerable human emotion,” and Nehemiah 8:10 asserts that “the joy of the LORD shall be your strength!” What is Christian joy? Vapid happiness?
