SUMMARY:Woven: Parents Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Jan 12\, 19\, 26 and Feb 2 from 5:00-6:15pm\n\nJoin us for this discussion of the book “Woven: Nurturing a Faith Your Kid Doesn’t Have to Heal From” at St. Paul’s.  Childcare will be provided and there will be an optional dinner after.  This will be a great discussion and also a time to connect with other parents at St. Paul’s.\n\n\n In this book Meredith Miller suggests that many people approach building faith as if they are building a brick wall. The wall seems strong\, but if a few bricks are removed the entire thing tumbles. \n Instead of this model\, Miller invites us to think about how we might create a spider’s web of faith. Webs are elastic\, and still strong if a few strands are broken. With Woven\, families can nurture the kind of faith that can flex and grow\, be broken and repaired. This is the sort of faith that can stand up to the life a child will live\, the doubts they will encounter\, and the questions that will come up along the way. \n Sign up and more info can be found here.

SUMMARY:Door Chalking
DESCRIPTION:Chalk your family’s door this Epiphany! After all services the weekend of Sunday\, January 5th\, we will be handing out kits\, with chalk and a prayer sheet\, to all families to take home and chalk their door. This short liturgy is a way of marking our homes with symbols\, usually above the front or main entrance\, and asking God’s blessings upon those who live\, or work\, or visit throughout the coming year. It is a tangible way of honoring God in our lives\, and reminding ourselves to seek Christ’s light in all of our everyday experiences. Come and pick up your supplies\, and learn how to engage in this great family spiritual practice!

SUMMARY:St. Paul’s 100th Anniversary in Mt. Lebanon Celebration
DESCRIPTION:At Washington Elementary School Auditorium \nOn December 21st this year\, St. Paul’s will have been serving the community of Mt. Lebanon for 100 years. Before our parish’s move to Mt. Lebanon in 1924\, our parish served the community of Laceyville\, now Pittsburgh’s Hill District.  When the parish was moved to Mt. Lebanon\, for the first five years we worshipped in the auditorium of Washington School (now Washington Elementary School on Washington Road in Uptown Mt. Lebanon) until our current building was completed.  We will begin our celebration of St. Paul’s 100th right where it all started!\n\n\n\nAs part of this celebration\, we will be preparing a time capsule with items from every group\, ministry and activity of St. Paul’s in 2024.  The time capsule is to be eventually placed under the renovated St. Margaret’s Garden worship space when it is refurbished as part of our upcoming Capital Campaign. The items for the time capsule will be presented and collected during the offertory during this special service.  Every ministry is invited to participate by providing items smaller than a deck of cards and/or a paragraph explaining how and what your ministry is doing. It is suggested that ministries think about ways that you communicate\, what issues you are concerned about\, what parish life is like for you –  things that can give people 100 years in the future insight into our parish today. Please feel free to review tips that the Library of Congress recommends and contact Theodore Somes at tsomes@stpaulspgh.org for more information or to let him know what you are planning on presenting for the time capsule.

SUMMARY:Adult Forum: Learning the Daily Office
DESCRIPTION:Led by the Rev. Theodore Somes. Looking to add some calm and meaning to your daily routine? Join us on November 24 as Theodore introduces the Daily Office\, an ancient form of prayer designed to center your day around prayer. \n With its origins in the earliest days of Christianity\, this practice has stood the test of time for a reason—it works. SUMMARY:Adult Forum: Nurturing a Faith Your Kid Doesn’t Have to Heal From
DESCRIPTION:Join Laura for a discussion on how to share our faith with children. This discussion will be based on Meredith Miller’s book “Woven: Nurturing a Faith Your Kid Doesn’t Have to Heal From.” In this book\, Miller suggests that many people approach building faith as if they are building a brick wall.  The wall seems strong\, but if a few bricks are removed the entire thing tumbles. \n Instead of this model\, Miller invites us to think about how we might create a spider’s web of faith. Webs are flexible\, and still strong if a few strands are broken. With Woven\, families can nurture the kind of faith that can flex and grow\, be broken and repaired. This is the sort of faith that can stand up to the life a child will live\, the doubts they will encounter\, and the questions that will come up along the way. \n Although this book is aimed at raising spirituality in children\, it has profound insight for all of us and will be beneficial for people in all stages of life.

SUMMARY:Adult Forum: The Episcopal Church and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the Undercroft \n Discontent in American colonists against England fomented a seven-year-long Revolutionary War culminating with independence and the formation of a new nation\, the United States of America. Three-quarters of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Anglicans\, the institutional church of the nation they were\, at risk of treason\, separating from. The Church of England had parishes in colonial America in part supported with tax revenues. These were under the authority of the Bishop of London; there were no Bishops in the colonies. Many of the immigrants to the colonies were getting away from religious persecution including the Quakers and others who were escaping the Anglican Church. Nothing boded well for the survival of the Anglican churches in America. Yet these parishes were reorganized as the Episcopal Church which continues today as a large mainstream Christian denomination. Part of the reason may be that the church was organized using democratic principles embodied in the government of the new nation. Join us for this presentation offered by parishioner Geoff Hurd.
